The Sentry Safety 500 & 520 Series Dual Door Panic Exit Bar Package is a complete surface-mounted exit hardware solution designed for double-door applications requiring reliable emergency egress and coordinated door operation. This package combines the 500 Series Push Type Panic Exit Bar as the primary door device with the 520 Series Vertical Rod Panic Exit Bar as the secondary door device, providing a properly configured dual-door exit system for commercial, industrial, and high-traffic environments.

In a dual-door application, the primary door is designed to open first, allowing the secondary door to function correctly once the primary door has been engaged. The included 500 Series features a durable push-type design with a deadlocking bolt system, integrated dogging functionality, and cylinder lock capability for controlled exterior access when paired with compatible accessories. The 520 Series complements the system with top and bottom vertical rods that provide secure two-point latching on the secondary door, ensuring proper alignment and reliable operation across the entire opening.

Both panic exit bars are surface-mounted, designed exclusively for use with Sentry Safety Handles ONLY, and support right- or left-hand installation on compatible doors. With adjustable sizing options and the ability to accommodate wide openings, the 500 & 520 Series package is an ideal solution for double-door applications where dependable emergency egress, controlled access, and long-term durability are required.

Trimming the Panic Bar to Size:

Both the 500 Series and 520 Series Panic Exit Bars can be trimmed to fit smaller doors. The section of the panic bar beyond the push pad is hollow square tubing. Both models come from the factory 40" long and can be shortened by cutting the excess tubing from the end of the bar. An included end cap is installed after cutting to provide a finished appearance. Cutting can be done with a hacksaw and allows the panic bar to be reduced down to 25" in length.

Right- or Left-Hand Mounting:

The 500 Series Panic Exit Bar has no designated top or bottom. To change the handing, simply rotate the panic bar 180° and mount it on the opposite side of the door.

The 520 Series Panic Exit Bar can also be installed on either right-hand or left-hand doors but requires the internal spring assembly to be moved. To change the handing, remove the head cover by removing the four screws. Unscrew the flathead screw located below the spring to disengage the top assembly from the panic bar. Loosen the screw holding the spring, remove the spring, and attach it to the opposite screw location. Tighten the spring into place, reinstall the flathead screw on the opposite side, and secure the top assembly back onto the panic bar.

Latching and Mounting:

Both the 500 Series and 520 Series Panic Exit Bars are surface mounted and install on the rear (secure side) face of the door. The main difference between the two models is the way they secure the door:

• 500 Series: This is a rim-style panic exit bar with a single-point latch. The latch engages a surface-mounted strike installed on the door frame behind the closed door. The strike is not installed on the inside edge of the frame where a standard handle latch may have previously been located.
• 520 Series: This is a vertical rod panic exit bar with top and bottom latching points. The rods extend to the top and bottom of the door. The top rod engages a surface-mounted strike on the frame, while the bottom rod engages a floor keeper with a drop pin that secures the door at the floor.

If there was a handle previously installed on the door, it must be removed before installation. Caps are available to cover the holes left behind after removing the handle, and door jamb brackets are available to cover the original latch location on the frame. Mounting bolts are included; however, depending on the door material, you may choose to use wood screws, self-tapping metal screws, or sex bolts for added strength. Sex bolts provide a stronger installation by securing the panic bar through both sides of the door, with the male and female components joining together in the center for a secure hold.

Dogging:

The 500 Series Panic Exit Bar is equipped with Allen key dogging. Dogging allows the latch to remain retracted so the door can be opened freely without operating the push pad. Allen key dogging provides a more secure method of holding the panic bar unlocked because it requires a tool to engage or disengage. Insert the Allen key and turn it to retract and hold the latch in the open position. Turn the key back to release dogging and return the panic bar to normal operation.

The 520 Series Panic Exit Bar does not include dogging. Because the 520 Series uses top and bottom vertical rods to secure the door, the latching system is designed to remain engaged for proper operation.

Outside Door Handle with Key Release

An outside door handle can be added when exterior access is required. Without this accessory, the door can only be opened from the inside using the panic bar. The handle replaces the standard cylinder release function and provides key-controlled access. The handle or latch interacts with the panic bar the same way as the included cylinder lock by providing a momentary release. The key only locks or unlocks the handle; it does not directly disengage the panic bar. Once unlocked, the handle operates the panic bar until it is manually locked again.

Surface-Mounted Electric Strike

A surface-mounted electric strike provides another method of releasing the door from outside or from a remote location. The electric strike replaces the standard mechanical strike. When the electric strike is not activated, the panic bar engages it the same way it would a standard strike. When triggered by an access control device, the strike releases, allowing the door to be pulled open from the outside.

Compatible access control devices include keypads, card readers, intercom systems, desk-mounted push buttons, remote controls, and GSM cellular receivers. When using an electric strike, an exterior pull handle and compatible access control device are also required.

Door Closer

Door closers are available in several styles with different features; however, their main purpose is the same: to automatically close the door after it has been opened. Since both the 500 Series and 520 Series automatically latch when the door closes, a door closer is a popular accessory to help ensure the door remains closed, secure, and latched.

Pull Handle / Finger Pull

This accessory makes the cylinder release easier to operate. When using the cylinder, the key must be turned while pulling on the door at the same time. A pull handle or finger pull provides a convenient grip point, making it easier to pull the door open while releasing the panic bar.

500 Series Panic Bar Compatibility

The 520 Series Panic Exit Bar can be used together with a 500 Series Panic Exit Bar for dual-door applications. This configuration is ideal for overlapping double doors. The 520 Series secures one door to the frame using its top and bottom vertical rods, while the 500 Series secures the second door to the first door. When properly installed together, pressing the 520 Series push bar allows both doors to open.
